Sydney Thunder will be looking to get that second spot back in their upcoming game as they take on the Sixers on 2nd January 2019 at Sydney. The Sixers, on the other hand, are sitting comfortably at the top of the table and have ascertained them a top-four spot.

MATCH PREVIEW

SYDNEY THUNDER WOMEN

Sydney Thunder lost to Perth Scorchers in their recent-most encounter where they failed to chase a subpar score on a tricky surface to bat on. The Thunder have now lost two games on the trot and another couple of losses can put them in a spot of bother which makes their next encounter even more important.

Option to field first after winning the toss, Thunder bowlers were accurate and disciplined with the ball as they got rid of Jones, Lanning, and Graham inside the batting powerplay. Lisa Griffith was the chief destructor with Stafanie playing the supporting role. Their bowlers kept chipping away with the wickets throughout Scorchers’ innings with Rene Farrell being exceptional at the death. She picked up two important wickets to deny any momentum whatsoever to the Scorchers in the final over.

The chase of 125 should have been an easy one, but disciplined bowling by Scorchers coupled with reckless batting from the Thunder made it an uphill task for the Thunder. Barring Rachael Haynes and skipper Alex Blackwell, none of their top-order batters could stay at the wicket. Harmanpreet Kaur was painfully in her 31-ball ball knock which garnered just 19 runs. Thunder have a strong batting lineup which has done well in the competition so far and a single failure should not deter their motivation and confidence.

SYDNEY THUNDER WOMEN PLAYING 11

Rachel Priest (wk), Alex Blackwell (c), Rachael Haynes, Naomi Stalenberg, Harmanpreet Kaur, Stafanie Taylor, Nicola Carey, Rene Farrell, Lisa Griffith, Belinda Vakarewa, Samantha Bates, Rachel Trenaman, Hannah Darlington, Maisy Gibson, Saskia Horley

SYDNEY SIXERS WOMEN

Sydney Sixers cemented their place in the knockouts with a close win over Adelaide Strikers where the Strikers failed to chase a modest total set by the Sixers’ women. The Sixers have been the most consistent side on the tournament and just two losses and eight wins out of ten games validates that.

Batting first after winning the toss at Adelaide, the Sixers got off to a decent start with Elysse Perry and Alyssa Healy putting 31 runs for the first wicket. Healy was the first one to fall for a personal score of 23. Ashleigh Gardner then stitched together a wonderful partnership of 93 for the second wicket with Elyyse Perry before their skipper was dismissed for 47. Gardner, too, missed her half-century as she was caught behind off Devine at 49 three runs late. The Sixers lost momentum towards the back-end of their innings and despite a terrific start, they finished with just 147 runs on the board.

Against the experienced batting top-order of Adelaide Strikers, the Sixers’ bowlers needed to keep things tight up front and they didn’t disappoint. Perry got rid of Sophie Devine in her first over which stalled Strikers’ innings for a while. Just when the Strikers were looking to take off, Marizanne Kapp and Dane van Niekerk picked up Saville and Patterson in consecutive overs to derail Strikers’ chase. Niekerk played an even more important role when she came back in her second spell as she not only kept things tight but also dismissed dangerous looking Suzie Bates. The Sixers’ bowlers finished the innings beautifully with the ball as Strikers fell short of the target by nine runs.

WBBL 2018-19 Sydney Thunder Women vs Sydney Sixers Women 40th Match Prediction

Considering the balance and the sheer number of match winners present in the Sixers’ lineup, their supremacy in the points table isn’t surprising. To add to that, they have Alyssa Healy and Elysse Perry in terrific form with Ashleigh Gardner to follow. With a superb batting lineup and a powerful, varied bowling attack, Sydney Sixers will be a tough team to beat not only in the next match but in any of their upcoming matches.

SYDNEY SIXER WOMEN PLAYING 11

Ellyse Perry (c), Alyssa Healy (wk), Ashleigh Gardner, Erin Burns, Sara McGlashan, Dane van Niekerk, Marizanne Kapp, Lauren Smith, Sarah Aley, Hayley Silver-holmes, Lauren Cheatle, Carly Leeson, Stella Campbell, Tahlia Wilson, Jodie Hicks

OUR PREDICTION

The Thunder are coming off back to back losses against Perth Scorchers and will be itching to make a move in the points table. They were outsmarted by the Scorchers in all departments of the game and need to fix the chinks in their armor with the business end of the competition not too far. The Sixers, on the other hand, have done pretty well – both in their recent games and in the tournament and will be looking to extend their dominance. With an aggressive and a well-balanced batting lineup which is complemented beautifully with a powerful bowling attack, the Sixers are favorites to emerge on top in the upcoming fixture.
