ABOUT THE MATCH
It is an important game for Stars who need to win every game hereon to qualify for a next round. Although it isn’t as important for Thunder to win the upcoming encounter, they’d still want to win the contest and maintain their supremacy in the points table.
SYDNEY THUNDER WOMEN
Sydney Thunder have been one of the better teams in the tournament so far and their second position in the points table validates that fact. They’ve seven out of the eleven matches with contribution coming from all departments.
Although 15 points should be enough to take them to the next round, they’d be looking to get another win in their kitty and cement their place in the knockouts. The Thunder have had mixed results in recent time with two wins and two losses in the last four games they’ve played.
Despite losing a couple of quick wickets against the Stars, Sydney Thunder never allowed their run-rate to drop with excellent little cameos from Rachel Haynes, Harmanpreet Kaur, and Alex Blackwell. Sydney Thunder have a batting lineup that bats deep with Suzie Bates coming in at six and they have a wide array of bowling options.
With the business end of the tournament no too far, the Thunder will want to introspect the vulnerabilities they’ve shown in the series before it’s too late. They’ve shown a tremendous amount of promise so far in the tournament and continue to be one of the toughest team to beat in the Women’s Big Bash League.
MELBOURNE STARS WOMEN
The equation is pretty simple of Melbourne Stars – win all their remaining matches and book a berth in the playoffs. The Stars are currently at the sixth spot in the points table with nine points accumulating by scoring four wins.
Things haven’t been rosy for Melbourne Stars since their last four games. At one point in time, they were placed comfortably among the top-four teams at the ladder, but three back to back losses coupled with an unfortunate washout has really hampered their hopes of qualification to the next round.
Against Sydney Thunder, the game which was washed out, the Stars looked down and out midway through Thunder’s innings with almost all their bowlers carted for runs. The Stars were at 92 for 3 when rain halted the proceedings with Stars’ bowlers having no clue whatsoever. Holly Ferling and Alana King were their best bowlers of the day as they had the figures of 3-0-25-2 and 2-0-11-1 respectively before the rain intervened. The Stars have failed to step on the gas pedal in the last few games and it will be interesting to see if they can step up their game when it matters the most.
Although they were awarded a point, the Stars would have felt a little unfortunate of having been robbed an opportunity to garner two very important points. They now need to win every game they play which isn’t an easy task considering the form they’ve been in their last few matches.
The Thunder, on the contrary, just need one more win to cement their place in the playoffs and will be looking to get that against the Stars. Considering the recent form of the two sides in question and their respective teams on paper, the Thunder are favorites to win the upcoming contest and knock the Stars out of the competition.
