ABOUT THE MATCH
Adelaide Strikers and Perth Scorchers locked horns a few hours ago and they are set to meet again at Alice Springs on 13th January. The game will be of little significance as far as qualification for the playoffs is concerned, but the winner of the match will move to the fifth spot in the points table.
Perth Scorchers Women had played twelve matches when we are writing this. They won six and losses six matches. They are holding the fifth position on the table with twelve points. Another win in this match will take them to the fourth position. On the other side, Adelaide Strikers Women could manage to win just four out of their twelve matches played. They are holding the sixth position on the table.
PERTH SCORCHERS WOMEN
Prior to the last match, Perth Scorchers were required to win all of their remaining matches to have any chance whatsoever to qualify for the semifinals. However, they failed to win the first of the two matches against Adelaide Strikers.
Although KL Cross was extremely tight upfront, Cleary leaked runs from the other end which allowed Adelaide Strikers to get off to a steady start. Heather Graham and Ellis King bowled well in the middle overs and returned with the respective figures of 4-0-25-2 and 3-0-18-1 which dragged Strikers’ total down a bit.
Batting responsibly was all that was required from the Scorchers’ batters upfront, but their failure to do so was the primary reason of Scorchers finishing as the second-best side. Barring Ebsary, who scored 38 off 30, no one in their batting lineup was able to stay at the wicket let alone score runs which resulted in 30 run loss while chasing a smallish total of 139.
ADELAIDE STRIKERS WOMEN
Adelaide Strikers will be feeling gutted to be knocked out of the competition despite registering a much-needed win in their last encounter. They are at 11 points with just one match to go and no longer have the chance to finish in the top-four.
Batting first against Perth Scorchers, the Strikers started off well with a brilliant partnership between Sophie Devine and Suzie Bates. A couple of useful contributions from McGrath and Patterson and a well-made 59 from Sophie Devine took them to a total of 138. at one time, they were looking to score in excess of 150 but lost too many wickets in the slog overs which is something they’ll be looking to work on.
139 wasn’t an easy total to defend a needed a herculean effort from their bowlers. Megan Schutt and Sarah Coyte were terrific upfront and never allowed Scorchers’ women to get going. The opening duo of Schutt and Coyte picked up five wickets between them for only 41 runs combined. Danielle Hazell picked up three wickets towards the end of the innings which acted as the final nail in the coffin for the Scorchers.
It’s the last match of the season for both the sides and with a semifinal slot no longer available, the motivation to play out of the skins could be lacking in the upcoming encounter. However, the winner will occupy the fifth spot in the points table which the two teams will be eyeing for.
Perth Scorchers’ performance has faded out in the last few games while Adelaide Strikers have been brilliant. Furthermore, the Strikers will derive the confidence from their today’s win over the Scorchers and they certainly are better-placed to emerge on top in what will be the final game in the tournament for both the sides.
