IND Team News
With one eye on the forthcoming tour of Australia, all three of KL Rahul, Prithvi Shaw and Mayank Agarwal could be in line to start in Hyderabad as India look to give their batsmen time in the middle. That could mean Ajinkya Rahane misses out, or Rahul may have to make way to accommodate Agarwal’s debut. The bowling unit that fired so well in Rajkot is likely to be retained, however, with Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ishant Sharma and Hardik Pandya all unavailable.
IND Key Players
Virat Kohli’s 139 in the first test – the India captain’s 24th century of his test career – took him to 1018 runs in his last nine test matches, at a phenomenal average of 59.88. It followed his efforts in vain on the tour of England, during which he scored three 50s, and two 100s and 593 runs in total at an average of 59.30.
He is the experienced leader of this India team, whereas Prithvi Shaw is its newest start – the 18-year-old marking his test debut with 134 at the top of the order in Rajkot. He shared a 206-run stand for the third wicket with equally in form Cheteshwar Pujara (86) to maintain his recent first class form, which included big centuries for India A against West Indies A and South Africa A earlier in the year.
India’s batting line-up is backed by a superb bowling unit too, with Mohammed Shami having taken 33 wickets in his last nine tests, and Ravichandran Ashwin 29 in his last eight. Kuldeep Yadav has earned a test call-up too, and the mystery spinner claimed 5-57 in the second innings of the first test against West Indies.
IND Team Form
India are looking to bounce back after defeats in their last two tours, including the 4-1 thrashing in England which preceded this series. They had previously lost 2-1 in South Africa, with a one-off test victory against Afghanistan in between.
In South Africa, they were bowled out for 209 and 135 as they lost a low-scoring first test, and then fell for 151 chasing 287 to win the second test. India did hit back in the third test in Johannesburg, however, in another low scoring game. They posted 187 and 247 but won by 63 runs thanks to Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami’s bowling.
They bounced back with their innings and 262 run win against test debutants Afghanistan – dismissing them for 109 and 103 in reply to 474 – but fell to four defeats in five games in England. A narrow defeat at Edgbaston was followed by a thrashing at Lord’s, before India hit back to win at Trent Bridge. They lost at both the Rose Bowl and the Oval, however – despite Virat Kohli being top run scorer and joint man of the series – to crash to a 4-1 defeat.
That was their last test action prior to the big win in the first test against West Indies – winning by an innings and 272 runs to improve on the Afghanistan result by ten runs.

West Indies Team News & Playing 11
WI Team News
Kemar Roach could return for West Indies, having missed the first test due to a family bereavement. Keemo Paul could be the man to make way after going wicketless in Rajkot and in the warm-up game too. The extent of captain Jason Holder’s ankle injury was not fully revealed and, should he miss the second test too, Sherman Lewis – called up to the squad to replace injured Alzarri Joseph – is likely to be retained after taking two wickets on his test debut.
WI Key Players
Kraigg Brathwaite, who took over the captaincy in Jason Holder’s absence last time out, has been a rare positive for West Indies, hitting back to back centuries against Bangladesh. He also scored 52* against the Indian President’s XI in the warm-up match but could not carry that form into the first test. Opening partner Kieran Powell’s breezy 83 in the second innings of that game at Rajkot was one of few highlights for the West Indies, meanwhile. Brathwaite has 677 runs in his last ten innings, and Powell has 590.
If Jason Holder returns it will be a big boost, meanwhile. He has 32 wickets in his last eight tests and will partner Shannon Gabriel with the new ball, with the latter having claimed 41 in ten. The latter’s tally includes the 13 he took in one match as West Indies drew with Sri Lanka at Gros Islet in June. Kemar Roach claimed 5/8 in the first innings of the first test against Bangladesh at North Sound, having earlier taken 11 wickets in the three-match series against Sri Lanka.
WI Team Form
West Indies beat Bangladesh heavily in their most recent series before this one, winning both home tests by big margins – an innings and 219 runs at North Sound and 166 runs in Kingston. Kragg Brathwaite hit centuries in both games, while Kemar Roach claimed 5-8 in the first innings of the first test as Bangladesh were bowled out for 43 in just 18.4 overs.
That was preceded by a drawn series with Sri Lanka, again at home, winning the first test and drawing the second but being unable to see out the series win as they crashed to defeat in the third.
Away from home, however, they lost to New Zealand in their most recent away series – a 2-0 defeat over two tests last winter.
West Indies Predicted Playing 11
- Kraigg Brathwaite, Kieran Powell, Shai Hope, Shimron Hetmyer, Sunil Ambris, Roston Chase, Shane Dowrich, Jason Holder, Devendra Bishoo, Kemar Roach, Shannon Gabriel

IND vs WI Head to Head
Victory in the first test of this series was just India’s 19th win in 95 previous test matches against West Indies. The West Indians have won 30 and there have been 46 draws. The only nation India have a worst test record against is Pakistan and yet West Indies have not beaten India since 2002.
India have won 11 and drawn nine of the 20 test matches between the two since West Indies’ last series win that year, including their 2-0 win in a four-test series in the West Indies in 2016 – their most recent meetings in the longest format of the game.
On that occasion, India started with a big innings win at North Sound as Virat Kohli scored a double-century, before they hit 500/9 declared in the second test at Kingston in a draw – despite West Indies only scoring 196 in their first innings, Roston Chase’s unbeaten century saved a draw in the second innings.
India wrapped up series victory in the third test at Gros Islet, however – bowling the hosts out for 108 in pursuit of 346 in the second innings – before just 22 overs were possible in a rain-ruined final test in Trinidad. Ravichandran Ashwin finished the series with two centuries to his name and 17 wickets.
West Indies vs India Betting Odds
World number one team India are huge favourites to win the second test, after a comfortable victory in the first test and unbeaten 20-game run against the West Indies. India are 1.11 to win with Bet365 and Betfair, whereas West Indies are as high as 21.00. Virat Kohli is 2.87 to be India’s top batsman in the first innings, after his 24th test century in the last match, but Prithvi Shaw showcased his talents in that match too and is 5.00, while Cheteshwar Pujara looked in good form and is 4.50 to outscore his team-mates. As for the bowlers, Ravichandran Ashwin’s spin bowling makes him 2.60 favourite to be India’s top first innings bowler, ahead of Kuldeep Yadav (4.75). Mohammed Shami is 5.00 and will be bowling in unfavourable conditions.
India vs West Indies Prediction
India were in sublime form in the first test, putting their heavy thrashing at the hands of England firmly behind them, and they can seal series victory in Hyderabad.
Final Verdict: Back India to beat West Indies at 1.11 with Bet365 and Betfair.
